Irũngũ Houghton currently serves as Executive Director for Amnesty International Kenya. As Amnesty’s spokesperson and chief strategist in Kenya, I lead a team of committed investigative researchers and campaigners working to end human rights abuses and realise the Constitution of Kenya.
Between 2013-2017, I was previously Executive Director for Chapter One Kenya and the Society for International Development. Here with other colleagues, we established an influential public interest campaigning program and several alliances. The program has expanded the right to association and protected public school land and public resources from corruption over the last five years.
Over the last 25 years, I have worked or volunteered with most of biggest NGO brands in the world including ActionAid, Equality Now and Oxfam International. In these capacities I have advised several African Governments, the African Union and the G8 among others. I have also voluntarily chaired the Kilimani Project Foundation over the last six years (www.kilimani.co.ke)
I love hosting honest and bold conversations that encourage ethical and empowering citizenship. It is this that gets me up early to appear on breakfast media shows and write a column in the Standard newspaper each week.
I am currently finalizing a book manuscript on Building Constitutionalism in Kenya and exploring the potential of social entrepreneurship for governance and human rights work.
Send me a message or engage me on social media, I am happy to chat. Word of caution, I don't entertain cynicism well.
